Responses of Phytoplanktonic Chlorophyll-a Composition to Inorganic Turbidity Caused by Mine Tailings

چکیده

Inorganic turbidity can limit light penetration in water and reduce phytoplankton photosynthesis. Anthropogenic activities such as mining produce or augment the amount of suspended inorganic particles water. Recent disasters Brazil have released tons mine tailings into aquatic ecosystems, with known unknown negative consequences for life, biodiversity, ecosystem services beyond human material losses. Here, we investigated effects on chlorophyll content composition caused by sediments from two areas Lake Batata, one natural other impacted bauxite tailings. We experimentally compared different levels (12, 50, 300 NTU) addition lake a chlorophyll-a gradient (5, 15, 25 μg/L). did not consistently concentrations. In treatments high chlorophyll-a, was associated lower concentrations at end experiment. On hand, low-chlorophyll treatments, higher area, overall were than area. Phagotrophic algae dominated both area (Chrysophyceae 34%, Chlorophyceae 26%, Cyanobacteria 22% total density) sediment (Euglenophyceae Chrysophyceae 23%, 20%). conclude that does lead to reduction allowed levels, indicating affected more phytoplankton.

Preventing acid mine drainage from mine tailings

Mining activity always has high impact on its surroundings, being waste deposition the cause of multiple and complex problems to the environment. One of them is Acid Mine Drainage (AMD), causing acid water percolation through large areas in the mine site. Portugal was a prosper tungsten producer from the beginning of the XX century, having its apogee during World War II. Nowadays there are mill...

Prediction of Acid Mine Drainage Generation Potential of A Copper Mine Tailings Using Gene Expression Programming-A Case Study

This work presents a quantitative predicting likely acid mine drainage (AMD) generation process throughout tailing particles resulting from the Sarcheshmeh copper mine in the south of Iran. Indeed, four predictive relationships for the remaining pyrite fraction, remaining chalcopyrite fraction, sulfate concentration, and pH have been suggested by applying the gene expression programming (GEP) a...

Impact of mine tailings on surrounding soils: Case study of Draa Lasfar mine, Marrakech- Morocco

The present study represents a first insight into the Draa Lasfar min (Marrakech - Morocco) to assess the degree of polymetallic pollution caused by anthropogenic activities (like mine extraction) and consequently the possible diffusion of heavy metals and to predict the risk of their mobility in the surroundings of the mine area. The edaphologic parameters pH and electrical conductivity (EC) w...

Accelerated weathering of biosolid-amended copper mine tailings.

Application of municipal biosolids to mine tailings can enhance revegetation success, but may cause adverse environmental impacts, such as increased leaching of NO3- and metals to ground water. Kinetic weathering cells were used to simulate geochemical weathering to determine the effects of biosolid amendment on (i) pH of leachate and tailings, (ii) leaching of NO3- and SO4(2-), (iii) leaching ...
